Six councils across Warwickshire have responded to a Government decision to create two unitary councils for the county, announced on 16 July 2026.
The reorganisation will divide Warwickshire into two new authorities. The northern unitary council will serve North Warwickshire Borough Council, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, and Rugby Borough Council. The southern unitary council will cover Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Warwick District Council.
Councils acknowledge different views
North Warwickshire Borough Council, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Rugby Borough Council, Stratford-on-Avon District Council, Warwick District Council and Warwickshire County Council issued a joint statement acknowledging the Government's decision.
The six councils recognised that authorities across Warwickshire held differing views on the best structure for local government. However, they noted a strong history of cooperation across the county, with Government previously praising the area for high levels of inter-council collaboration.
Focus on service continuity
All six councils committed to working together constructively during the transition. Their shared priority is ensuring residents, businesses and communities continue to receive the services they rely on, and that the move to the new councils is managed carefully in the best interests of Warwickshire.
The councils said important work now lies ahead. They will work closely with Government, partners, staff and councillors to support a smooth transition and help shape the best possible future for local services.
