The Government has announced a pause on its Local Government Reorganisation programme in Warwickshire following updated legal advice. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is among the affected areas, with the reorganisation proposals now under review.
Warwickshire is one of 14 areas where the Government will review and pause reorganisation plans while it considers whether the process is legally robust and aligned with its priorities.
The Government has confirmed that councils with local elections scheduled for May 2027 will proceed on existing council boundaries. Nuneaton and Bedworth does not have elections scheduled for that time.
Council response
Tom Shardlow, Chief Executive of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said the council will consider the Government's announcement carefully and engage with the Government as further information becomes available.
Cllr George Finch, Leader of the Council, expressed concern about the resources spent on the reorganisation process. He stated that local government exists to deliver vital services for residents, and that the money and officer time devoted to reorganisation would be better used maintaining frontline services, supporting vulnerable residents, and improving communities.
Cllr Finch said: "We owe it to our residents to ensure that any future reorganisation delivers clear, measurable benefits and that the cost of getting there does not come at the expense of services our communities need today."
