Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has appointed Councillor Peter Gilbert as Portfolio Holder for Finance, the council's leadership announced on 28 July 2026.

The appointment comes after a period of political instability within the authority. Council Leader Cllr George Finch said the move reinforces the council's commitment to maintaining strong governance in the borough.

Experience and Continuity

Cllr Gilbert is an experienced local government politician who previously served as leader of the council. Deputy Leader Cllr Mike Bannister will continue to lead Resources and Internal Affairs, providing what the council describes as continuity and stability.

All other Cabinet members and policy areas remain unchanged. A full list of Cabinet members is available on the Council's website.

Financial Discipline Ahead

Cllr Finch said: "Strengthening the Cabinet with someone of Cllr Gilbert's calibre is consistent with that approach. Many people across the borough know Cllr Gilbert personally and know his reputation for hard work, sound judgement and an unwavering grasp of local government finance."

The council highlighted that as it prepares for Local Government Reorganisation in Warwickshire, strong financial management is essential. Cllr Finch added that the administration is focused on challenging old ways of working, insisting on value for money, and putting residents before bureaucracy.
