Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has completed 15 new council homes at Pearson Place on Armson Road, Bedworth. The development transforms a former garage site into new housing and helps meet local housing need.
The site now comprises six one-bedroom flats, six two-bedroom houses and three four-bedroom houses. Harper Group began construction in April 2025, and the homes are now ready for occupation.
Honouring Local Mining History
Pearson Place is named in honour of Bert Pearson, recognising his connection to the Exhall Colliery disaster of 1915. The name helps preserve an important part of the area's local mining heritage.
The disaster occurred on 21 September 1915, when a fire at Exhall Colliery put 375 miners at risk. Fourteen men died in the incident.
Bert Pearson, described as a young lad at the time, was found alive trapped beneath the fallen bodies of three miners. The weight of his workmates collapsing on top of him caused him to lose consciousness, but it saved his life. Stuck at the bottom of the pile, he was prevented from breathing in deadly fumes. As air in the tunnels improved, Bert awoke to find himself trapped and was discovered by rescuers who brought him to safety.
Council Housing Expansion
Cllr James Bartlett, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "The completion of Pearson Place forms part of the Council's wider commitment to increase the supply of high-quality council homes. This makes effective use of Council-owned land, supporting local communities and contributing towards the creation of vibrant and sustainable neighbourhoods across Nuneaton and Bedworth."
The development is part of the Council's Corporate Plan and ongoing commitment to increase the number of council homes available for residents.
